THE BIRTH OF A STYLE - CONDENSED

In the late summer of 1996 Alan Thompson, Jr. was in Disneyland and heard the high energy style piano for which Rod Miller is famous. Alan asked Rod to give him lessons but Rod does not give lessons. Alan "bugged" Rod for three months and finally Rod said, "you have to promise to practice for four hours every day." Alan replied "I'll do 5 or six if that's what it takes ! When do we start ?" Alan progressed very rapidly. So rapidly, that during a lesson in early 1998, Rod asked Alan to play "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" to refresh his memory. The song book had the melody line as sheet music but the chords were in guitar notation ( Am, C, Cmaj7, etc ). Alan did not read guitar chords and Rod doesn't read music so they played the song together - three-hand. Alan used his band experience to weave in a counter-melody and VOILA! - their unique four-hand style was born. They played the tune in public and the rest is history. By July 1999 they had 18 arrangements for the CD (pictured above) which was released in October, 1999. To Purchase please:
